This picture is from my upcoming Sri Lanka diary, which will be posted soon. In 1977, I lived in the county for about four months on a studing abroad program. I traveled across the country from the capital, Colombo, to Kandy to Jaffna by train. Along the three-day trip, I would see young girls standing along the railroad tracks. Later, I asked my academic advisor about the situation of young women. He said that girls looking for husbands would go from small villages to watch the passenger trains that passed about every week. They would stand along the tracks, hoping to catch the eye of a potential admirer who might offer a marriage proposal. This young girl is standing in her best dress, hoping for an attraction. The lady behind with the child was probably her sister.
